Lay Dominicans of North America

U.S.A. and Canada

North American DLIPC Meets

Delegates from the five North American Provinces (USA and Canada) met in Washington D.C. From May 11 -14, 2017 at the Washington Retreat House. The retreat house, run by the Franciscan Sisters of the Atonement, is conveniently located across from the campus of the Catholic University of America, the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception and within walking distance of the Eastern Province House of Studies. The Eastern Province USA hosted the meeting which is hosted by each province in rotation.

Those attending were: Christine Husson and Konrad Hanz of the Province of Canada (St. Dominic); Cosette Heimann and Marianne Jablonski of the Eastern {St. Joseph) Province; Joaquin Wong and Cynthia Donnelly of the Southern (St. Martin de Porres) Province; Denise and Michael Harvey of the Western (Most Holy Name of Jesus) Province; Jonathan Stahl and Sharon Huizenga of the Central (St. Albert the Great) Province along with their provincial promoter, Fr. Steven Kuhlmann; as well as Fr. Rui Carlos Lopes, Promoter General, and Joseph Komadina (ICLDF representative) of the Central Province. Nancy Coleman of the Eastern Province served as the Recorder.

The participants shared concerns, successes and problems both solved and unsolved. Christine Husson with Konrad Hanz gave an excellent presentation of a cooperative project with other branches of the order and others to organize housing for refugees. A proposal was made for the making of a film to serve for promotion and formation. This was well received and members of the Eastern and Western provinces planned to do further discussion, planning, and action on this.

There was also discussion of the coming Congress of the Laity in Fatima and how it would fit in with our own timing of meetings and associated expenses. All agreed to meet in July of 2018 in advance of the Congress. This meeting will be hosted by the Province of Canada.

The attendees were very appreciative of the outstanding hospitality of our hosts both at the retreat house and by the members of the Eastern Province who treated us to a dinner at an Outback, a local restaurant of a popular national chain of Australian themed restaurants. We were also treated to a tour of the House of Studies.
